Photo ID Requirements

In 2005 Governor Mitch Daniels signed Public Law 109-2005 which requires that Hoosiers present photo identification at the polls in order to vote on Election Day. Information about this requirement can be found here: http://www.in.gov/sos/photoid

Photo ID is Required

Please insure you have a valid Photo ID before going to the polls. You will NOT be allowed to cast a regular ballot on election day if you do not have the required photo ID.

What do I need?

In order to vote a regular ballot on Election Day at your polling place, or vote early absentee-in-person prior to election day you will need to provide government-issued photo identification.

The photo ID must meet certain requirements:

  • The ID must display your photograph.
  • The ID must display your name, and that name must conform to the name on the Voter Registration rolls. However, the name needn't be identical -- for example, Rick on one and Richard on the other should be acceptable.
  • The ID must have an expiration date and that date can be no earlier than November 2, 2004 (the date of the last general election).
  • The ID must be issued by a State or Local Government.
    • An Indiana driver's license, Indiana State ID card, US Passport, or Military ID are fine.
    • Student IDs from IU and Ivy Tech Community College are acceptable providing they meet all of the criteria above... photograph, name, & expiration date.

What if I don't have a photo ID?

If you don't have a suitable photo ID you can get one at the BMV Bureau of Motor Vehicles Branch. This Photo ID is not a driver's licence, but is valid for identification purposes at the polls. In order to get a government-issued photo ID you will need to bring identification documents to the BMV. For information on the required documents, visit the Indiana Secretary of State's PhotoID webpage. If you do not currently have a valid photo ID get one as soon as possible.

What if I don't have a photo ID on Election Day?

In addition to regular hours, the BMV will be open on the same schedule as the Polls on Election Day. It is possible to get a photo ID on the day of the election.

Alternatively you can cast a provisional ballot. Provisional ballots will only be counted if you subsequently provide a vaild photo ID to the County Election Board within 13 days after the election. To insure your vote is counted and has minimal exposure to challenge, make sure to bring your photo ID with you on Election Day.
